"Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better".
I don't have to like the characters in a book to like the story. Of all the characters I didn't like, Jude, the supposedly “good mom” was at the top of my list followed by her weakling son, Zach. I didn't like Jude because of the way she treated everyone...most of all her coldhearted treatment of her granddaughter and secondly I didn't like Zach because he let his girlfriend, Lexi, take the rap for something that was really his fault. I didn't care for Miles, the father in the book either, as he was a doctor and let his wife suffer with severe depression for over 6 years doing absolutely nothing to get her help. Both he and his son seemed to be missing a vital part of the male anatomy. Even Mia didn't seem likeable to me as she was so very immature but possibly a mental handicap could explain her childlike behavior. Even the "good girl", Lexi, disappointed me by still loving Zach after the way he let her down. The only strong likable characters in the book were Lexi's great aunt Eva, the lawyer, Scott and the child, Grace, and all played secondary roles in the story. The book held my interest enough to finish it but the writing seemed more appropriate for a teen read. I think the flawed characters I loved to hate held my interest more than the story line.
I really liked the book Night Road by Kristin Hannah. It was an easy read. The characters were developed quite well and the story was believable. My least favorite character was Jude. Jude was too controlling and too perfect. My favorite was Eva. She really stepped up for Lexi. I also liked Lexi and Grace. I was happy with the ending, though I thought Zack was very immature and the lowest of low for not taking any blame. I think many of his problems came from Jude. I was happy with the ending and would recommend this book to a friend. I am glad they were going to become their own little family. I am going to read more books by Kristin Hannah.
