Meeting July 2002

All I will say is Black Glass by Karen Joy Fowler.
Hostess:  Debbie DP

I can tell a long story of this book. It was the first book club book for me to host. I really wanted to choose a great book. I used a reading guide for book clubs and this book was listed in the top three. Well let me tell you it would not receive a very high rating from me. It was terrible and I couldn't even understand it and it was my book. Please check out this book and let me know what you think. Many others have. Look it up it has great reviews. Just not by me.

I looked back at the ratings of this book. It is so fun to read our reviews. This book received a thumbs DOWN, a 0 by myself and two other memebers, and a 1 by another member. WOW bet you'll line up to request this book

I choose this book by reviewing items in Readinggroupguides.com and because I thought in joining a book club I would learn to enjoy other types of books. I will never do that again. I enjoy the book club but I did not like this book. I am apparently not a reader of short stories. Also as the title BLACK GLASS implies, unclear, is not my type of book. I do not like things that do not immediately have an exact meaning or that I have to work very hard to figure out. I read for pleasure, relaxation and enjoyment. I hope no one else disliked this book as much as I did. I will stick to murder mysteries. I enjoy reading them and like to guess who did it.

Rating: 2.5A unique mixture of fantasy and satire, BLACK GLASS cannot be taken at face value. The strength of its stories comes from their basis in real life. By dissecting them, everyday life is seen in a new light..”Lieserl” reflects the life of a workaholic, while “The Brew” is a new take on the standard coming of age story. While eccentric to a fault in some stories, many of these tales were adventurous and interesting. I would recommend this book to people seeking an unusual collection of stories.

This collection of short stories received rave reviews. With the exception of the story, “GO BACK”, I did not understand what I was reading. On some of the stories I may as well have been reading the sentences backwards for all the sense they made to me. I only finished the book out of respect for the book blub member who selected it. If someone offered to pay me to read the book again, I wouldn’t want to job because it was a real chore to get through. So many books, so little time. Don’t waste yours reading this.

I was lost from page one. I did not understand much of anything in this book. The Brew and Go Back were the only stories that I liked even a little. I could not recommend this book to anyone. I only finished it because I thought it had to get better. It didn’t. I gave this book a rating of 0.

This book was a chore for me to read. I kept thinking it would get better. It never did, all the stories were strange or just plain made no since to me at all. They were very hard to read at times. This book must appeal to a very different crowd, or they just plain out have to pay people to write good reviews for the book cover. I feel like it was a waste of time to read. This might seem harsh, but it is very hard to read when you have no clue what is going on. All the twists and turns are very hard to follow in some of the stories.

Out of a possible 5 I rate this book a 1, it is a 1 because I am not sure you can rate in a negative.
